Gangtok’s homestay boom reshapes life on the Sikkim–Tibet border

In the high villages of North Sikkim, where winter once meant six months of near-isolation, homestays have rewritten the calendar. Families now host trekkers, students and photographers through the year.

The boom has brought steady cash, and with it a subtle shift: grandmothers who never left the valley now run guest kitchens serving thukpa and local millet bread.

Officials are encouraging the model as a way to keep border populations settled, a strategic as much as an economic goal.
