Sikkim’s organic mission turns 20: lessons from the world’s first fully organic state

Twenty years after Sikkim banned synthetic fertilisers and pesticides, the world’s first fully organic state is exporting something new: the playbook. Officials have hosted delegations from a dozen countries.

The gains are visible in the soil and the brand — Sikkim cardamom and ginger carry a premium at Delhi markets. But farmers on the ground describe a harder arithmetic: organic certification costs money, and yields dip before they recover.

The state has responded with village-level support groups and a ‘transition fund’. Whether the model scales is now the question policy-makers from other hill states are asking.
